2013 Golf Tournament a Huge Success!

Team Gardner Takes Home College Cup

Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) recently held its 2013 Ed Lannom, Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament at The Farms Golf Club on Friday, August 16.  Although the competition was intense, the overall winning team of Dr. John Gardner won bragging rights and took home the coveted DSCC College Cup.

The tournament was one of the most successful ever with 28 teams participating in the annual event.  Co-directors this year were Larry White and Patrick Williams.  DSCC President Karen Bowyer served as the celebrity putter and was stationed at the eighteenth hole during the event.

Tournament winners were recognized in two flights of play along with winners of special contests including the longest drive, sponsored by Keith and Youlanda Wilcox, a putting contest, sponsored by Grecian Steakhouse, a closest to the pin contest, sponsored by Sonic Drive-In, and the much-anticipated $1 million hole in one contest, sponsored by White & Associates Insurance.

J.D. Stephens made the longest drive of the day winning $100.  Also pocketing $100 wins were putting contest winner Kenyatta Lovett and George Tennyson who won the closest to the pin contest on hole number four.  Additionally, the top two golfers who were closest to the pin on hole number nine included Mark Jagello and Matt Smith.  Both men were eligible to make a hole in one from 165 yards on hole number nine and a chance to win $1 million at the end of the tournament.  Although the $1 million cash prize was not claimed this year, both shots from Jagello and Smith were breathtakingly close.

The overall winning team of the first flight included Chris Crysler, Landon Kersey, Dr. John Gardner, and Matt Smith with a score of 53.  The “Softball Dad’s” team including Bubba Dyess, Burt Gilman, Keith McIntry, and George Tennyson placed second with a score of 55.  The Davis Wealth Services team consisting of Mike Bevis, Chad Davis, Matt Madden and Ben Youree placed third with a score of 56.

The Farm Bureau Insurance - Covington team of Randy Brooks, Hunter Harris, Michael Harris and Kirk Richardson took first place honors in the second flight of play.  The team sponsored by Sonic Drive-in including Sara Jo Ferguson, Blake May, Mark Roberson and Eddie Shultz took second place, while the Caterpillar, Inc. team of Roy Bonds, Steve Bullard, Bruce Meade and Andy Sentrell placed third.

Platinum sponsors for this year’s tournament included Bill Reffert of Dyersburg, John D. Gardner, D.D.S., P.C. and Northwestern Mutual, both of Caruthersville, and City Liquor, Wine and Spirits of Dyersburg.

Along with several door prizes donated by local businesses, a gas grill, donated by Lowe’s of Dyersburg, was won by Blake May.  Four free rounds of golf, donated by The Farms Golf Club, were won by Benny Spain.

Student-athletes from DSCC’s men’s and women’s basketball, softball, baseball and cheerleading teams were on hand throughout the day to assist tournament participants as needed.

The annual golf tournament is named after Ed Lannom, Jr., a longtime supporter of the College.  All proceeds from the event benefit DSCC student-athletes with scholarships as well as support for DSCC athletic programs.
