The use of alcohol can lead to serious health risks:

• Loss of muscle control, poor coordination, slurred speech;
• Fatigue, nausea, headache;
• Increased likelihood of accidents;
• Impaired judgment;
• Possible respiratory paralysis and death.

Heavy drinking can lead to:

• Alcoholism;
• Damage to brain cells;
• Increased risk of cirrhosis, ulcers, heart disease, heart attack and cancer of liver, mouth, throat, and stomach;
• Hallucinations;
• Personality disorders.

Health risks associated with use of illegal drugs include:

• Increased susceptibility to disease due to a less efficient immune system;
• Increased likelihood of accidents;
• Personality disorder;
• Addiction.

The use of illicit drugs and the abuse of alcohol during pregnancy may cause spontaneous abortion, various birth defects or fetal alcohol syndrome. Additionally, the illicit use of drugs increases the risk of contracting hepatitis, AIDS and other infections. If used excessively, the use of alcohol or drugs singly or in certain combinations may cause death.
