Team Sharp Takes Home DSCC’s College Cup as Winner of Ed Lannom, Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament

Team Sharp Takes Home DSCC’s College Cup as Winner of Ed Lannom, Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament

Rob Sharp’s team claimed the traveling crystal cup for the first time during Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC’s) annual Ed Lannom, Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament Sept. 10 at the Lenox Event and Golf Company in Dyersburg.

Twenty-two teams competed in the annual event led by golf tournament director Danny Walden. DSCC President Karen Bowyer served as the presidential putter throughout the afternoon on the 18th green.

Tournament winners were recognized in two flights of play and winners of special contests, including a closest to the pin contest, a putting contest, and the longest drive contest. In addition, a $1 million hole-in-one contest was sponsored by The Lenox Event and Golf Company. This year, back by popular demand, the “Eagle Swing,” in which golfers purchased a chance for a member of DSCC’s softball team to take the first swing with a bat from the No. 14 hole.

Rusty Norville won a cash prize when he made the longest drive of the day. Richard Donner and Danny Watson were the closest-to-the-pin contest winners, making them both eligible to play for the $1 million hole-in-one contest. Although both made respectable drives, they each came up short in the end. The winner of the putting contest was Richie Gammon.

Rob Sharp’s team, the overall winner of the first flight, included team members Rob Sharp, Mark Jagello, Mike Mallard, and Mike Bevis. The Dills’ team, consisting of Don and Sharon Dills, Glen Hale, and Gerald Hill, placed second. The City of Newbern placed third and included team members Jason Roberts, Steve Pennington, Ryan Gammons, and Shane Thurmon.

DSCC team consisting of Jeff Alford, Sherry Baker, Martha Crites, and Brigham Scallion took first place honors in the second flight of play. The Rose Construction team, including John Paul Rose, Steve Norman, Mike Shelton, and Fidel Diaz, took second place. The Faith Deliverance team consisted of Reginald Taylor, Thomas Armstrong, Mike Motley, and Joe Cagle came in third.

Along with numerous hole sponsors and door prizes donated by local businesses, a gas grill, donated by Lowe’s of Dyersburg, was won by Rodney Walker. Additional door prizes were donated by BSN, DSCC Athletic Department, DSCC TECTA, First South Financial Credit Union and Simmons Bank. The platinum sponsor was Champion Roofing and Construction, Dot Foods, Faith Deliverance Apostolic Church, Inc. and Rose Construction and silver sponsors included Forcum Lannom Contractors, LLC, J.K. Wong, Inc and Trenton Mills, LLC. Special sponsors included Burks Beverage and Broadcasting, the Lenox Event and Golf Company.

DSCC’s annual golf tournament is named in memory of Ed Lannom, Jr., a longtime supporter of the College. All proceeds from the event benefit student-athletes with scholarships and support for athletic programs.
