Students Bring Home Wins from SkillsUSA

DSCC successful in first ever participation in annual competition

Seven Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) students participated in their first ever SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference March 19-21 with competitions held at the Chattanooga Convention Center and at Chattanooga State Community College.

Over 1,400 career and technical education (CTE) students from high schools and colleges across Tennessee competed in approximately 110 contests to demonstrate their skills in career fields such as electronics, manufacturing, arts and design, construction, cosmetology, health care, transportation and human services.

KenNasha Malone of Covington won Gold for Audio/Radio Production; Constance Cherry of Bartlett won Silver for Related Technical Mathematics; and Brianna Reed of Covington won Bronze in Technical Computing Applications. Other students participating included Drakan Blackstock of Ripley, Reynajia Givhan of Covington, Joyce Nelson of Halls and Julia Williams of Dyersburg.

Williams was one of nine finalists out of 40 who advanced through local competitions to become a regional finalist in the Outstanding Technical Student of the Year program. She was presented a bronze and a silver lapel pin as well as a new iPad for progressing to the finals.

During the conference, students received job offers to be hired on the spot by business and industry professionals in attendance.

SkillsUSA is a nationwide partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA annually serves over 300,000 high school and college/postsecondary students, and their instructors in technical, skilled and service occupation instructional programs. SkillsUSA chapters are in career and technical high schools, and two- and four-year colleges.
