Soar to Success Summer Program

Free program will provide students the opportunity to complete learning support requirements in order to begin college-level classes this fall

Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) will offer a free Soar to Success Summer Program June 1-Aug. 5 for students needing to complete learning support requirements in order to begin college-level classes this fall. The free program will be held at the Dyersburg campus Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 12:10 p.m.

“Many high school graduates are not able to begin college-level courses such as English Composition and College Algebra and need to take Learning Support courses as a prerequisite,” stated Dr. Karen Bowyer, president of DSCC. “Because of the pandemic, many students have fallen behind in their learning. This Program will help students catch up this summer. It is being funded by the Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds in the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA).”

Students interested in taking these courses are encouraged to apply as soon as possible as a limited number of students will be accepted into the program. Applications can be submitted at www.dscc.edu/soar.

The program allows recent high school graduates the opportunity to complete two classes in either Learning Support Mathematics, Learning Support Reading and/or Learning Support Writing over the summer. Classes include instruction as well as tutoring, peer mentoring, review sessions and homework time.

Books and school supplies will be provided free of charge. In addition, students may receive up to $1,100 in three stipends over the course of the summer program. Students may also earn up to $250 in vouchers to the bookstore for their fall semester books.

A kick-off celebration will be held June 1 from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., which will include lunch, a review of the program and student schedules, and fun activities to meet fellow participants, instructors and tutors.
