Dyersburg State Hosts Virtual Nursing Pinning

67 nursing graduates recognized during first-ever virtual Nursing Pinning

Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) recognized 67 nursing graduates and one staff member during its first-ever virtual Nursing Pinning for its 70th, 71st and 72nd nursing classes in its Traditional, LPN to RN Fast Track, and Paramedic to RN nursing programs. A total of 1,927 nursing students have graduated from DSCC over the past 39 years. The ceremony was presented via video to students Sept. 18 via their MyDSCC email and to the public through the College’s YouTube and social media pages.

The ceremony recognized 26 graduates from the spring 2020 traditional nursing class, 31 graduates from the spring 2020 LPN to RN Fast Track nursing class, and 10 graduates from the fall 2020 Paramedic to RN nursing class.

Class officers introduced for the traditional program included Andrea Medling of Greenfield, president; April Hamilton of Lexington, vice president; Ashlee Myers of Newbern, secretary; Chelsea Parker of Dyersburg, treasurer; Paulyn Castro of Ripley, historian; and Angela Degner of Bradford, historian. Class officers for the LPN to RN Fast Track program included Cassie Bergeron of Brighton, president; Maya Halliburton of Ripley, secretary; Tiffany Halliburton of Troy, historian; and Kaylan Ross of Finger, historian. Class officers for the Paramedic to RN were Tim Haskins of Drummonds, president; Matthew McClure of Cottage Grove, vice president; Edith Burns of Jackson, secretary-treasurer; and Collin Haskins of Drummonds, historian.

The ceremony proceeded with Dr. Karen Bowyer presenting the Friend of Nursing Award, on behalf of each nursing class, to Brenda Springfield of Tigrett, custodian.

The Scholastic Award, presented to students with the highest grade-point average (GPA) in each class, was awarded to traditional nursing class graduate Torie Palmer of Martin, graduating with a 3.61 GPA; LPN to RN nursing class graduate Cynthia Ralph of Covington with a 3.61 GPA and Lindsay Molands of Union City with a 3.60 GPA; and Edith Burns of Jackson with a 3.87 GPA.

The Peggy Pendergrast Award was presented to traditional nursing class graduate Chasity Young of Dyersburg; LPN to RN nursing class graduate Cynthia Ralph of Covington; and Paramedic to RN nursing class graduate Edith Burns of Jackson. This special award, given in honor of the late Peggy Pendergrast, founding director of the DSCC nursing program, is presented to students demonstrating the qualities that are essential for effective nursing practice.

The Clinical Practice Award, selected by members of the nursing faculty, was presented to traditional nursing class graduate Franklin Williams of Ripley; LPN to RN nursing class graduate Lyndsay Hunt of Jackson; and Paramedic to RN nursing class graduate Sheri Vanderpool of Buchanan. This award is given to nursing graduates who demonstrate qualities such as the practice of nursing as a humanistic art and science, the recognition of each person as a unique individual and acceptance of legal and ethical professional accountability.

The Friendship Award, chosen by fellow class members, was presented to traditional nursing class graduate Chasity Young of Dyersburg; LPN to RN nursing class graduate Callie Hinson of Newbern; and Paramedic to RN nursing class graduate Collin Haskins of Drummonds.
