Dyersburg State Hosts Art Exhibit at the Jimmy Naifeh Center

A reception will be held on Monday, September 11, 2023, from 7:00-8:30 p.m.

Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) is hosting an art exhibit by artist Suzanne Evans. The exhibit will be displayed inside the Jimmy Naifeh Center's Learning Resource Center through Saturday, September 23, 2023. A reception will be held on Monday, September 11, 2023, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Evans’ love of art and music began early as a child. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and moved to Tennessee in 1964. Growing up in Memphis, Evans attended a private school and learned music, perspective, drawing, and color composition. Music and painting began to intertwine as the years progressed, and she developed many different styles in art and music. In 2016, Evans temporarily lost her eyesight due to a medical condition. After regaining her sight six weeks later, Evans was determined to enjoy the beauty of the world. She began hiking, kayaking, and studying other master artists. The works of Vincent Van Gogh, Jackson Pollock, William De Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, and Grace Hartigan gave her encouragement to follow her dreams. Evans continues to study art, travel, and enjoy all the beauty the world has to offer.

Evans is a member of Memphis Germantown Art League, Bartlett Art Association, 901 Artists, and Artists’ Link and participates in several local charity and exhibition events. “Expressing emotions sometimes may be difficult for some, but for myself, I enjoy using acrylic inks and oil pastels to create multi-layered emotional compositions. One of the things that amazes me the most in creating art is the movement of my hands like a musical conductor. Every piece of art I create is an extension of my inner self. Balancing both the past and present using bold colors and textural layers helps to create such an expressive abstract work of art. Combining different ideas and constructing them into a beautiful, moving art piece is challenging and rewarding. To visualize the movement of the music and transpose those movements of rhythm, melody, and color into my painting are intuitive strokes of beauty,” stated Evans.
