DSCC Hosts Virtual Honors Convocation

Students recognized for achievements inside and out of the classroom

Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) recognized students and faculty during its first-ever virtual prerecorded Honors Convocation inside the First Citizens National Bank Auditorium on the Dyersburg campus. The video was released to students May 26 via their MyDSCC email and to the public through the College’s YouTube and social media pages.

Recognized as being named to the 2020 All-Tennessee Academic Team were Rebekah Blazer and Mackenzie Emery, both of Atoka. Emery was also recognized as being awarded the 2020 Coca-Cola Leader of Promise Silver Scholarship recipient.

Alexandra McKelvy of Dyersburg and Danielle Gansereit of Union City were recognized for their second place wins in the SkillsUSA Public Safety and Security Contest for Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).

Students recognized as graduating with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average (GPA) with at least 30 DSCC credit hours included Leigh Ann Braden of Ripley, Katlyn Brook Canada of Dyersburg, Sarah Marie Cheshire of Gates, Mackenzie Paige Emery of Atoka, Jared Devin Fielder of Obion, Allie Elizabeth Johnson of Rives, Morgan Bernadette Kiernan of Atoka, Donna Renee Kilburn of Bells, Currie Jean McIntyre of Covington, Savannah McLain Pham of Halls, Maureen Nicole Wignes of Munford and Christy Dawn Woelm of Atoka.

Dr. Karen Bowyer, president of DSCC, recommended seven faculty members for promotion including Shawna Adams, assistant professor of biology, Teresa Boswell, assistant professor of English, Dr. Wayne Corlis, assistant professor of accounting, Lisa Hayden, assistant professor of nursing, Darla Smith, assistant professor of sociology, Andrea Stephenson, assistant professor of mathematics and A.C. Taylor, assistant professor of communications. She also announced the faculty tenure recommendation for Kim Dew, associate professor of nursing.

In addition, students were recognized for their leadership at the College and in the community for the 2019-2020 academic year. They included student ambassadors and tutors, and leaders in the Alpha Epsilon Alpha chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and Student Government Association (SGA). Students making the dean’s list for the past three consecutive semesters were announced along with special awards determined by faculty.
