DSCC to Host NISOD Fall Event

College educators encouraged to attend "Teaching Critical Thinking" workshop Nov. 6

College educators who want to explore active learning strategies and come away with lesson-planning ideas are invited to a one-day workshop at Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) this fall.

A one-day ’Teaching Critical Thinking” workshop will be held 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at the DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County, 3149 Highway 51 South, Covington, Tennessee. The event will be held inside the DSCC Learning Resource Center/Student Center, room 104.

Capped at 75 participants, those who register by Oct. 9 will receive a $50 discount. Lunch is included in the price of the workshop.

Co-hosted by the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) and DSCC, this regional workshop will teach the fundamentals of the human brain regarding dispositions toward critical thought, bias, use of evidence and heuristic thinking. Participants will learn what works and what does not work regarding critical thinking instruction; how to apply precise pedagogical methods that help students at any level improve their critical thinking skills; how to apply precise pedagogical methods to improve writing skills based on critical thinking practices; and how to create critical thinking rubrics.

Participants will receive a certificate of attendance upon completing the workshop.

Prices for the workshop vary by where educators are employed:

  • DSCC: $139 for early registration, $189 after Oct. 9;
  • NISOD member college: $169 for early registration; $219 after Oct. 9; and
