Barnett Retires after 23 Seasons of Coaching

Reception held June 27

Faculty, staff, retirees and alumni joined Alan Barnett, Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) former athletic director, men’s head basketball coach, and associate professor of physical education, for a heartfelt goodbye during a retirement reception June 27.

Guest speakers from DSCC included Dr. Larry Chapman, former dean of student services, Dr. Jamie Frakes, dean of the Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County, Larenda Fultz, dean of student services, Harold Hildreth, assistant basketball coach, Charles Taylor, head women’s basketball coach, Jonathan Taylor, interim athletic director and assistant baseball coach, Dr. Charlene White, vice president of finance and administrative services, George White, head softball coach and Robert White, head baseball coach.

“Alan has had a positive impact on many students’ lives over the past 24 years,” stated Dr. Karen Bowyer, president of DSCC. “We are grateful for his service and commitment to our students and wish him all the best in his retirement.”

Barnett began his coaching and teaching tenure at DSCC in 1995 when he was named the athletic director, head coach of the men’s basketball team and instructor of physical education.

Prior to DSCC, Barnett served as head basketball coach at Jackson State Community College for five years and as assistant coach at both Quincy College and Southeast Missouri State University for three years each. He was named Tennessee Community College Athletic Association (TCCAA) Coach of the Year in 1994-1995 and was inducted into Southeast Missouri State University’s Hall of Fame in 2007.
